Payloads should be kept small - just a few hundred grams at most.
At least 30mm of polystyrene foam (or similar) all round - this not only insulates the payload but adds impact protection.
Generally use lightweight materials and components
No heavy or rigid structural components
Parachutes should be securely attached to the payload - a parcel knot is suggested as a good way of ensuring the payload is attached and can't come apart.
